ANCHORAGE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PARKING STRUCTURE

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA

NGJ was the Prime Designer for the Anchorage International Airport Parking Garage, a 1,230-Car Parking Facility providing convenient passenger access to the International Airport Terminal.  After an extensive national consultant search, N. G. Jacobson & Associates, Inc. was selected for Prime Design Services for master planning, traffic flow, circulation, terminal access and integration, facility conceptual and functional design, and final design and construction administration.  The four-level, 400,000 S.F. garage was designed with many special considerations, including the ability to exit 1,200-cars per hour, advanced corrosion protection and low maintenance requirements, operation in an extreme harsh and cold environment, extensive security and revenue control systems, and the ability to sustain earthquake loads 2.15 times the Uniform Building Code Seismic Zone 4 design load requirements.

The Anchorage Airport Garage has received honor awards for Design Excellence from the Consulting Engineers Council of Washington and the Alaska Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, as well as the Institutional & Municipal Parking Congress (now IPI).

As an added benefit to the Airport, the Garage was completed at a construction cost of $1.5 million below the Airport’s original budget of $18 million.  The Garage structure is composed of cast-in-place, partially post-tensioned reinforced slabs and beams with precast concrete exterior barrier spandrels.  The facility is a one-level subterranean and includes enclosed conditioned stairways and elevators, with access to the Terminal provided by glass enclosed climate controlled escalators.

Full Design & Construction Phase Support from initial Preliminary Design through Occupancy in 16 months.  Prior to the expiration of the warranty period, NGJ performed a Condition Survey and Investigation of Membrane Failure which was corrected by the Contractor on the top deck.
