JC PENNEY PARKING GARAGE RESTORATION
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA

NGJ was the Prime Designer for this 8-Story, Reinforced Concrete Parking Structure, constructed in 1965, has had a history of corrosion related distress and repairs from chloride contamination beginning in the Mid-1970’s. NGJ performed an ‘Investigation and Recommendations for Restoration & Waterproofing Report’ in June 1980. Repairs and waterproofing work were completed in 1981. |
In 1992, NGJ analyzed the effectiveness of the 1980 Investigation & Recommendations Report and the subsequent Construction Documents and repairs made in 1981 for their effectiveness; and also evaluation of the remaining service life of the Structure in conjunction with further repairs. |
Phase I & II (1993/1994) project, was primarily related to concrete deterioration and distress from chloride contamination and reinforcing steel corrosion of the cantilevered spiral exit ramp system in the garage, which at the Owner’s direction was not addressed in 1981. This work involved complete re-shoring of the entire 8-level, cantilevered spiral exit ramp structure, complete demolition, reinforcing steel repairs, and a new bonded Silica modified concrete overlay slab. This work was completed while keeping the garage in service to the public at 95% of its normal capacity. |
Phase III work, Parking Deck Relighting & Parking Deck Restoration was completed in October 1995. |
