Serving the historic (1919) 26-floor Walker Center Office Building in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, the adjacent Walker Center Parking Garage is a 500 car, 9-level conventionally reinforced cast-in-place concrete parking structure built in 1962. Constructed on a relatively small size property, the upper levels of the parking garage have air rights to cantilever out 16' over a private alley on its West side and project 40' North over the main newspaper printing plant for the two main newspapers in Salt Lake City. The ground floor of the parking garage has a coffee shop and a 24-hour Kinko's Copy Center. In the basement there is a private restaurant/club and over the top of the garage is 1-level of offices. The office and retail spaces in this facility have remained fully open during all phases of the work performed on this facility. |
|
Due to inadequacies in the original structural design and severe corrosion related distress of the parking deck slabs and beams by road salt carried in by vehicles, NGJ has been involved with this facility since 1992. Major elements of the work performed include emergency ramp replacement, , supplemental support of the East and West side cantilever walls, hydro-demolition removal of 4 levels of parking deck slabs and replacement with new, high performance concrete (HPC) slabs, corrosion inhibitors and anode installation, extensive concrete patch repair, new architectural facade, traffic deck waterproofing, new lighting, ADA improvements, cost estimating and technical assistance to ownership and preparation of preventative maintenance guidelines. |
